That’s a question for which not even I have an answer! On the outside I’m a part time writer who has held various full time jobs over the years from basic labouring jobs on building sites and in factories through to a stint as a security guard, mechanic, general DIY work, in fact anything that earned money. I can point to various retaining walls overlooking the highways around Melbourne and say I helped build that!
But it’s my writing that actually excites me or consumes me, depending on my mood at the time. I’ve been writing for most of my life, some 40+ years now. It’s only been since 1996 that I finally returned to writing after twenty years in the wilderness with no direction and no centre. I did my diploma in professional writing at Box Hill TAFE in 1997/98 and that gave me the grounding in writing and editing, as well as web design. Since then I’ve written dozens of short stories, articles, reviews and two novels. My first novel was The Boston Slasher published with Authorhouse.com, my second one is The Deepening Dark and is yet to find a home.
As to who I am? It’s hard to define who I am. I find my tastes in music, books, films and art too broad to put into a category. I’m as comfortable watching a romcom movie as one with car chases and firefights. I can read books like Twilight and get as much enjoyment from the series as the latest Dan Brown or a detailed history book. I’ve found that once you get into a pigeon hole you tend to make yourself a nice nest and stay there until you die or rust. I’ve always believed that we change every day, thousand of cells die and are replicated every day. Every seven years I think we have replaced every single cell in our bodies so we’re changing constantly whether we like it or not.
But I am a writer, that much is clear even to me. I write almost anything. I don’t want to settle into a particular genre because I find it stifling and suffocating. My latest book The Deepening Dark is a heroic fantasy, a far change from The Boston Slasher that was a crime thriller. My newest project is a spy thriller with vampires, I like combining genres to see what comes out in the mix.
So keep coming back and I will try to update this blog as often as possible.
Cheers!

Hi Alistair,
I hope this finds you well! My name is Maria and I’m part of the community team at Wattpad. I came across your RT of our Margaret Atwood announcement yesterday (thank you, by the way!) and checked out your site. I noticed that you’ve written several novels and was wondering if you’d be interested in partnering up with us somehow? When I’m not working with Margaret Atwood to help bring her werewolf poetry to our readers on Wattpad, my job is to find professional and indie writers to put on our Featured Story list (http://www.wattpad.com/featured). Would you be interested?
Here are some quick stats about Wattpad to give you a sense of our reach:
-10 million unique monthly visitors
-1.5 billion minutes a month spent on Wattpad
-1 comment posted every second
-3.2 million stories posted with another 300k+ added every month
-many popular titles have more than 10 million reads and 10,000 comments
Thanks and I hope to hear from you!
Warm regards,
Maria
